History of the Library The growth of the library has been phenomenal.
The history of the library is a reflection of the growth of the seminary. The growth has been steadily - from 60 books in 1986 to over 25,000 books in mid-2006.The leadership of Erwin Spruth emphasized the need for the growth of the library. He wrote letters to publishers, book distribution agencies and retired pastors to donate books to the library. His efforts yielded much fruit. Through his elaborate staff development program, faculty staff who went to the US to study established contacts with other book distribution centers and libraries in the US. The growth of the library had since been phenomenal. In 1996, on the day of a farewell service for Erwin and Lorraine Spruth, the Board of Governors of the seminary honored them by naming the library after Erwin Spruth. The library is, thus, known as Erwin Kwadjo Spruth library. The development of the library has been a major concern even after the exit of Spruth. A greater number of the books have been shipped by the Books Abroad and Home, Lutheran International Library Program (LILAP) and the East/West Interknit (EWI). The latter organized a library work team to travel from the US to Ghana.
Short Term Library Team Members: The dream became a reality when six women and a man arrived in Ghana and worked at the library from 20 - 30 September 2006. The team worked long hours cataloguing books into a Concourse library program that had been bought by the East/West Interknit. The team trained some of the staff to do the cataloguing. They worshipped and interacted with the seminary community and some African Instituted Churches in Accra. They had the opportunity to meet with the Board of Governors and to witness the 15th Graduation of the seminary. The paid a visit to a slave castle at Cape Coast and walked on a suspended canopy over the Kakum forest, near Cape Coast. The team donated a table-top computer, four laptops and many other gifts.
We are grateful to members of the work-team: Pamela Jervis, Sarah Jervis, Michelle Vascik, and Joel Johnson. We are also grateful to Annette Jones, the Director of EWI, who worked hard to put the team together. We are equally grateful to the following institutions who have donated books, journals, and sermon tapes: LILAP, EWI, Books Abroad and Home, Abiding Life Ministries International, Calvary Baptist Church in St. Paul, MN, Presbyterian Church of the USA. In 2009, the library was moved to new temporary quarters on a newly constructed second floor to the Founder's Block. This is the next step toward a permanent library building. We are grateful to all those who contributed toward construction of the temporary library. Further donations (designated to the seminary) through the following centers in the US will be greatly appreciated: Annette Jones 651 765-2550, LILAP 651 641-3251, NACD-GNTCS.
